Music And Dance of - West Bengal

Few names of higher importance or say the names who have paid a huge contribution in the sector of art of Performance have taken birth in the state of love and care – West Bengal.

A noteworthy and a notable music tradition is the Baul Music – performed by the Bauls – a sect of Mystic Minstrels.

Few other forms of folk music are – Bhawaiya and Gombhira. The folk music that is always heard in every corner of this state is accompanied by another music generating companion and that is EKTARA [a one-stringed instrument]. And when it comes to express love in a musical form then Shyama Sangeet is sung [a form of music dedicated to Hindu Goddess Kali]; and Kirtan composed with devotional group songs dedicated to Lord Krishna.

The state of West Bengal also occupies a heritage in North Indian Classical Music.

Music of choice includes the “Rabindrasangeet” songs created and adorned with tune and Rhythm by Rabindranath Tagore and “Nazrul Geeti” composed by Kazi Nazrul Islam.

When it comes to describe the traditional dance of West Bengal – then there is this one name which attracts more of attention known as Chhau Dance.
